An Endodontist Describes Root Resorption

Endodontist Ukiah, CA

Wondering if you should choose an endodontist to take care of root resorption? Read more here to find out.

Endodontists are dental professionals whose main focus is on saving natural teeth. This is important as the teeth were designed to last an entire lifetime. This means when something happens to you that jeopardizes the overall health of one or more of your teeth, an endodontist’s goal is to do everything in their power to save the teeth from being lost forever.

About endodontists

Endodontists are dental professionals who have received advanced training, allowing them the ability to utilize techniques that not all dentists are able to utilize. They use state of the art dental technologies, which means any dental patient who is in need of endodontic services can expect to receive the latest in dental technologies. After attending four years of dental school, they will further their education by completing an additional two or more years of training.

According to the American Association of Endodontists, less than three percent of dentists are endodontists. They are the go-to dentist for patients who are experiencing a lot of dental pain and due to their additional years of education, patients should feel confident in their ability to provide them with the services that they need to support their overall good oral health.

About root resorption

Root resorption is a serious oral issue that can potentially cause someone to lose one or more of their teeth. While resorption is normal when baby teeth fall out, for adults the process of resorption to eliminate bone will eventually result in tooth loss. Changes to the root of a tooth are more often than not caused by some type of fracture or severe decay to the tooth. When changes to their roots are occurring that are not related to a fracture or decay, a root resorption diagnosis is often made. While the reason for this diagnosis is not always understood, it seems that tooth trauma is a large factor, i.e. bruxism. Both internal and external resorption is possible, with both types leading to tooth loss, if not treated in a timely manner.

Treating resorption

Treating root resorption requires root canal therapy. If the resorption issue is not treated in a timely manner, it will become so advanced that it is no longer possible to perform the root canal that will save the tooth from being lost forever. The fact that this type of root canal therapy often requires extensive treatment makes it necessary to find an endodontist to perform the therapy.
