Ask an Endodontist: What Is a Diseased Tooth?

endodontist Ukiah, CA

An endodontist works with the soft tissue inside the tooth, which is known as the pulp. Sometimes, the tooth can become diseased. This may happen from decay, an injury or gum disease. The good news is that an endodontist works to save diseased teeth.

Decayed tooth

One of the most common types of diseased teeth is a decayed one. This is a very common condition. The only more common disease than tooth decay is the common cold. Dental decay can happen for many reasons. The most common reason for tooth decay is insufficient oral hygiene.

Failing to brush or floss the teeth allows plaque to build up on the teeth. This can attack the enamel of the teeth. However, poor oral hygiene is not the only reason for tooth decay. Genetics play a role as well. Some people are simply more susceptible to tooth decay than other people.

Older people and young children are more likely to get cavities. In older people, the enamel can wear away slowly. Some types of medications can cause decreased saliva production. There is a link between sufficient saliva and healthy teeth. In children, the baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth. Once the tooth is decayed, a patient may need to visit an endodontist for a root canal treatment.

Gum disease

While not strictly a tooth disease, gum disease can cause the teeth to fall out. It is one of the most common reasons for tooth loss in adults. It usually happens after the age of 30. If patients get treatment soon enough, however, they can avoid complications in the future.

Endodontic disease

Endodontics has to do with the pulp of the tooth. This is the live portion of the tooth and it helps keep the tooth strong. If a tooth is diseased, the pulp has either become infected or inflamed. If nothing is done, the tooth can die. This leaves the root of the tooth open for infection.

Sometimes, the pulp becomes exposed from a cavity or other dental issue. This allows bacteria to enter the area and cause an infection. An injury to the face or the tooth can cause the tooth to become bruised. The pulp will then become inflamed, which will cut off circulation to the tooth. The pulp will then die and take on a grayish cast to it.

A faulty crown can also cause issues. The crown is designed to protect the tooth. However, if the crown breaks, it can allow bacteria into the tooth. A crown may also wear out after some time. The crown will not last forever.
